New Music In The House

There is nothing like getting new music.

In our home we actually call it “new produce.”
(That came from a bi-weekly report that I use to get back in the early to mid 90’s but I doubt you really care about that!)

A week ago I got Future of Forestry’s ep “Travel” (2002) and “Cardboard Box” (2011) by Glenn Kaiser.
Both are excellent albums.

Kaiser’s “Cardboard Box” is an acoustic blues album that is really worth a good listen.  Amazon.com had it for only $4.98!
I couldn’t believe it.

Not far from where I live is a used cd and dvd store called
Movies, Music & More.
It is not my favorite store to find music
but I have gone in and found some good tunes there.
They are in the process of shutting down and all their music was a whopping $2.

On Friday I went in and found the
“Mercy Suit” (1995) by Michelangelo and the Difference and
Randy Stonehill’s “Edge Of The World”  (2002).

Music wise July is already starting to shape into a
good month.
Have you found any new music lately?
If so, what have you found.
Happy hunting!

Cornerstone Festival Thoughts

When I think about Cornerstone Festival there are certain sounds that come to mind.
Crowds cheering.
Guitar feedback.
Certain songs that take me back to a certain late night show at the Gallery Stage.
Then there are certain smells that come to mind.
Certain foods.
The smell of the crowd after a midnight show.
(Or is that a certain stench.  Hmm.  Never mind.)

Note:  the pictures in the post were not taken by me.  Sorry to disappoint all of you.
These are available with many more Cornerstone pictures at the following websiteL
http://cornerstoneguide.tumblr.com/
Go and see a lot more than what I have here.  Enjoy!

From the first time that I ever heard of Cornerstone Festival I wanted to go.
That would have been back in 1984 when the fest began.
I did not get to the festival until 1994.  My ex wife had absolutely no desire to go.
(In fact she struggled with my love for music!  She just didn’t “get it.” But that is another discussion for another day.)
My wife, son, and I made the trek for the first time in 1994, and what a trip it was.  With a visit to a hospital in Eureka Springs, AR, we almost did not make it to the festival.  My wife got hit hard with a kidney infection which made our stay in Eureka Springs a little longer than expected.

When we left Eureka Springs we were sitting at an intersection.  I looked at my dear wife and asked if we head north to Cornerstone or do we head west back home to Dallas.  She gritted her teeth and against her better judgement we headed north.
I know that she regretted it but deep inside I was jumping up and down.
We got to the festival grounds, set up our tents and got a lay of the land.
We made friends with the campers around us and had the time of our life.

We headed to the exhibit hall and I began a tradition that I kept up at every visit to the festival that I ever made.  My first purchase was at the GRR Records booth.  Glenn Kaiser always had a new release and then there were new Resurrection Band albums to pick up and then there would be that release that fell in the cracks and somehow I did not get a chance to buy.  The festival was always the place to do that.
And then there were those amazing gems that you can only find at Cornerstone Festival.  And of course there is the amazing Rad Rockers booth.  Are you not fimilar with Rad Rocker?  Great place to buy music.  Check out their website at radrockers.com.  These guys have those hard to find and out of print cds that you have been looking for.  Go and enjoy!
The two things that made Cornerstone a special place was of course amazing live concerts.  You would see bands and artists there that you would not normally get a chance to see live.
But most of all you would get to be with people that you only saw once a year.  You would camp with them, live next to them for a week, and it would be true community.
Leaving at the end of the week was always a mixed blessing of regret and relief.  You would not want to leave because you have made new friends, renewed friendships with special friends you only see once a year.  You are basking in the afterglow of a week where God has done an amazing work in your life with an incredible soundtrack playing none stop in the background.
On the other hand the idea of sleeping in a real bed and washing off Cornerstone dirt, mud, grime (and who knows what else) sounds really good!  Remember, you can only live like this for so long!

During the first year my concern was that my wife would not enjoy it.  Remember she had been really ill.  As we left the festival grounds and began to head home my wife began to make a list of what we would need the next year.  We actually attended the festival in 1994, 95, 96, 98, 2000, 2002, and 2003.  It has been a long stretch without getting to the festival.

And now it is coming to an end.
Goodbye Cornerstone.  Thanks for all the great memories.

The End Is Near

About two weeks ago
the word was released
that this year will be
Cornerstone Festivals’ last year.
Here is the link to the announcement that the Festival released.
http://www.cornerstonefestival.com/
Many have been in
heavy lament
since the news came out.
For many
Cornerstone Festival
is not just a music festival.
It is\was a place to
meet up
with like-minded individuals
whose faith fueled their art.
Unless a miracle occurs
I will
not be
at Cornerstone Festival this year.
Is it bothering me?
Did you have to ask???
I would love to be there one last time;
to enjoy the music,
the people,
the art,
the sounds,
the smells,
and everything that is
Cornerstone Festival.
I am going to post some Cornerstone Memories for a while
and reminisce over some great times.

Record Store Day 2012

Image above is from recordstoreday.com
Last month on Saturday April 21 was Record Store Day.
And what an exciting day it was.
As a family we view it as almost a national holiday
At least I do.
We got up somewhat early and headed down to Phoenix.
After a stop at an electronics store and
then an amazing lunch at Abuellos’
(one of our favorite restaurants)
we headed to one of my favorite record stores.
Zia Record Exchange.
This is one store that NEVER disappoints.

The store is located in a shopping strip and we noticed the parking lot was really busy.
Is this a sign that the store was hopping?
Yes it was!
There were people everywhere buying music.
We had a blast checking out
music,
and music
and more music!

Unfortunately I could only buy so much
good music.
But I did score really well.

Here is a list of what I got (in no specific order):

                             Eric Clapton 24 Nights
Janis Joplin I Got Dem Ol’ Kosmic Blues Again Mama!
                             Jeff Beck There And Back
                             Kansas Leftoverture
                             The Monkees The Monkees
                             Leeland Sound Of Melodies
Allman Brothers Band Eat A Peach
                             Jeff Beck Who Else!
Lynyrd Skynyrd The Best Of Lynyrd Skynyrd
Poor Old Lu A Picture of the Eighth Wonder
After a great visit to Zia we headed to Half Price Books.
I went over to the music section
and found a copy of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys that I picked up.
I headed home that day with 12 cds in my possession.
If you are a music buyer let me
encourage you to get out next year on
Record Store Day and support you local music store.
Early that morning
before we headed down to Phoenix
I came across an excellent
blog post from the
Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
regarding Record Store Day.
Here is a link to it.

Next Saturday Is the Big Day!

Next Saturday is the day that music buyers all over the world wait for all year . . .
RECORD STORE DAY!

This is a day set aside each year to get out
and support
your local record store.
In this digital age there are still those
independently owned record stores
that cater to music buyers.

(picture above from Record Store Day on Facebook)

Next Saturday
I hope to head down to Phoenix
and show my support
(and I hope that you get out and show yours too)!
To find a participating store in your area go to
or check out Record Store Day on facebook.
If all goes well
and I make it to the valley next weekend
I will clue you in where I go and what I find.
Get out there,
show your support
 and
have fun!

A Few Gems From The Local Music Store

A few weeks ago I headed into a local music store and picked up a few discs.
Here is what I got (in no specific order).

Blood, Sweat & Tears
Columbia Records  1969
I had not heard this album is so many years.  I jumped at it when I came across it in this store.  I forgot how amazing it was.
Pure magic.

Jeff Beck  Blow By Blow
Epic Records  1975
No one plays guitar like Jeff Beck.  Then you throw in George Martin’s brilliant production
and the result is this amazing album.  The last track on this disc,
“Diamond Cut,” is a true masterpiece.
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers  Damn the Torpedoes
MCA Records  1979
I read somewhere that this was Tom Petty’s response to the disco craze that was happening when this album was released.  If that is true then there is no doubt why disco faded a few years later and Tom Petty & band are still around.  Late 70’s rock-n-roll at its finest.
Bleach  Static
Forefront Records  1998
Bleach was a pretty good little alternative pop band that made music that was catchy.  You found yourself humming and singing their songs for days on end.  This is a fun little pop/rock album that I overlooked a few years ago and was really glad that I came across.  Fun catchy songs.

What music have you found recently?

Welcome!

Welcome to my blog.
We are here to talk music.
There will be times when we will discuss a new CD that I have picked up.
Maybe I will just rant about the state of the music industry.
The number one rule of thumb is I will only talk about music.
All of my other discussions I will leave for my other blog.

I have been listening to music all of my life.
As a small child I remember tugging
on my mother's apron asking her if we could listen to records.
I was three years old at the time.
She always said yes as soon as she finished her housework.

I remember getting my first stereo
when I was six years old.
It was one my fondest Christmas presents.
And of course
I remember getting my first Beatles record
(and so many great albums after that).

My love for music continued all through
high school,
college
and into adult life.
My wife understands my obsession
and at times we even look for music together.

I am now 56 years old and my music buying continues.
In fact my latest acquisition occurred
yesterday
in honor of my 20th wedding anniversary.

What do I listen to?
I enjoy many different styles of music.
My main two are classic rock and Christian rock.
But I enjoy many other styles also
(jazz, oldies, and some country among other genres).

Come and join me and we can have a good time talking and listening to music.
